After reading Jill Smolinki’s book, The Next Thing on My List, and the 40 Day Challenge article I found posted on her website; I was inspired to create a challenge for myself. Instead of doing one new thing a day for forty days (after all, I honestly don’t have the time or money to do that), I decided to give myself a year and do one new thing a week for the next 52 weeks.
Why am I doing this? Like Jill, I’ve found myself in a rut – not only with my writing, but in my everyday life. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve got LOTS to do with college (yes, I’m in my thirties and a college student – bleh); my family; a new home (I’ve actually moved twice this year alone); and ALL the things I have going with GRW. Regardless of these activities, I haven’t DONE anything.
With the thought of this challenge, I found myself thinking outside of the box. What a wake-up call that has been. Just the thought of all the really cool things I would love to try has given me a new outlook on life and something out of the ordinary to look forward to each week.
With this in mind, I also CHALLENGE each and every one of you to try something new – whether it is with your writing or even in your everyday life. You don’t have to do it every day or even every week like I am. I’ve found that just once can give your creativity a boost. In doing this, I’ve come to recognize that there is no way to freeze time. Unless I become an active participant, LIFE will only pass me by. I don’t want that to happen to me and I hope by sharing a bit of my experiences, it won’t happen to you either. Check out my weekly update here on my blog each Monday and I’d love for you to share yours as well.
Good luck and HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!!!
