Apparently, my work wardrobe has entered its Hocus Pocus era.
Recently, I added a little Halloween spirit to my regular business outfit: brown suit jacket, tan pants, orange shirt. Perfectly appropriate for a day at work.
Then came the accessories.
Dangling pumpkin earrings. Orange nails. A ghostly necklace.
A little witchy bling never hurt a meeting, right?
One of my coworkers arrived at the same meeting wearing a much darker look, also completely business-appropriate. One of our bosses noticed that we were both getting into the spirit and decided our outfits represented two different Halloween personalities.
Mine was Hocus Pocus.
Hers was Morticia Addams.
Honestly? I’ll take it. Although now I’m wondering whether I should have brought a broom instead of my usual work bag.
It also got me thinking about how many different ways there are to enjoy Halloween. Some people love elaborate costumes and crowded parties. Others want a genuinely frightening movie and apparently have no concerns about sleeping afterward.
And sometimes, a treat, a comfortable chair, and a good story sound like the perfect celebration.
If that last option appeals to you, let’s plan a Halloween night in.
First, Choose Your Kind of Halloween
Your evening can be as sweet, mysterious, or spooky as you like. You can even change your mind halfway through.
That’s one of the advantages of celebrating on your own couch.
Something sweet
Maybe your ideal October evening involves a love story, a little banter, and the reassuring possibility that things will work out.
A small-town romance is a lovely choice for this mood, especially if it comes with a bakery and characters you’d enjoy spending time with.
Naturally, I’m thinking of Marianne and Jason in Drool Worthy. A few chapters, something chocolate, and a warm drink would make a very nice evening together.
Although reading about Marianne’s bakery without a snack nearby seems unnecessarily difficult.
A little mystery
If you’d like a puzzle to work through, reach for a cozy mystery.
A quaint setting, a curious amateur sleuth, and a collection of people who might know more than they’re saying can keep you happily turning pages. Add a seasonal setting or a witchy twist if that’s what you’re in the mood for.
There’s something satisfying about trying to solve a fictional mystery while your biggest immediate concern is whether to get another cookie.

Something spooky
Perhaps you want an eerie house, an unexplained sound, or a story that makes you suspicious of the hallway.
This is your evening, too.
Choose a ghost story, a gothic novel, or a thriller that’s been waiting on your reading list. Just consider putting your drink within easy reach before you begin.
Once the book convinces you that something might be lurking in the kitchen, getting a refill becomes a much bigger decision.
Make Room for a Little Movie Magic
A bookish night can absolutely include a movie break. Sometimes you want to turn a few pages, and sometimes you want to curl up and let the story unfold on screen.
Two movies I’d put on my Halloween-night list are Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic.
For a playful evening, I’d choose Hocus Pocus. It feels like a good match for pumpkin earrings, an orange manicure, and a willingness to have a little fun with the season.
Given my newly assigned workplace Halloween identity, I may be obligated to include it.
For a witchy evening with a romantic mood, I’d choose Practical Magic. That’s the one I’d pair with a cozy blanket, something warm to drink, and permission to settle in for the night.
You could even let your movie choice guide your reading. Follow the playful option with a lighthearted romance, or carry that witchy atmosphere into a magical love story or an intriguing mystery.
There are no required double features here. If you get comfortable and decide the book can wait until tomorrow, I support that decision.

Something Good to Eat
Halloween treats don’t have to require an afternoon of baking.
A warm cinnamon roll, a brownie, or a favorite bakery purchase will do beautifully. Popcorn belongs on the list, too, particularly if a movie is involved.
I like to imagine Marianne would arrange everything on a lovely tray. At home, I think we can agree that a brownie on a napkin still counts.
Pour a Little Autumn Into Your Mug
For a warm drink, I’d consider apple cider, hot chocolate, or a favorite fall tea. Coffee is always welcome, although you may want to consider how late you plan to stay up before pouring the second cup.
A cinnamon stick or a swirl of whipped cream can make an ordinary drink feel a little more festive. So can using the mug you usually save for a special occasion.
This seems like a perfectly good occasion to me.
And if the weather hasn’t quite gotten the autumn memo, an iced drink is allowed. Your Halloween atmosphere shouldn’t depend on the temperature outside cooperating.
Get Comfortable and Stay Awhile
Find a place where you can settle in. Bring over your blanket, your snack, and whatever you’re reading. Put your phone somewhere that makes it slightly less tempting to check it every few minutes.
Then give yourself a little time to enjoy what you chose.
That last part can be surprisingly difficult when there’s laundry waiting or something else you meant to finish. But an evening spent enjoying a story is worth making room for.
You don’t need to finish the book. You don’t need to watch both movies. And your home doesn’t need to look like an autumn decorating display.
A comfortable spot and something you’re excited to read or watch are plenty.
The pumpkin earrings are optional.
Although I can now personally recommend them for bringing a little Hocus Pocus energy to an otherwise ordinary day.

What’s your Halloween-night mood: a love story, a mystery, or a book that makes you check the locks? And if you’re choosing a movie, are you joining me for Hocus Pocus or Practical Magic?
