With fall upon us, the days are getting cooler. Which means more and more people will be hunkering down and looking for a good book to keep them warm.
As I look through the books on my bookcase (and flipped through the choices on my Kindle), I began to wonder what it was about the hero that stood out for me when I was browsing the bookstore shelves and bought each particular book. Was it the strong, silent ones? Or the joking, friendly guys? And what exactly did I consider to be the “alpha” hero?
I always thought it was the strong silent types for me. But then I started looking at the stories I’ve written and the ones I have coming out. Very few of my heroes are the strong, silent type. Most of my characters tend to be easy going, fun to be around, life of the party guys.
I came to the conclusion that maybe my head goes for the brooding, hard to reach, dangerous heroes. But that I tend to give my heart to the easy going, fun to be around, working with their hands type guys.
Which leads me to my question for this hop. Do you consider the happy, joking hunks part of the alpha group? Or is the alpha title reserved for the strong silent types?

I personally believe that the happy, joking hunks are part of the alpha group they just show it in a different way.

I think the Alpha title is not reserved to either of those types – Alphas, to me, are confident, self-assured, respectful men who are capable of taking charge but also able to trust their partner to do the same.

I think they can be, I know a few secondary characters Nick for example in The Dark Hunter series , used to be fun and joking but could kick butt as the rest of Alphas then tragedy struck and he became broody but I still thought of him as an alpha.

What makes an alpha an alpha is his strength, protectiveness, determination and love. This can be expressed in different ways, so he doesn’t have to be the strong, silent type, but he will break your fingers if you touch his girl again.

Hmmmm….not given that much thought. I guess when I think of alpha males, I think of strong, silent, tough dudes. But why can’t alphas be funny too? Sure, both could be alphas!
In my opinion the alpha title should be reserved for the strong silent types. That just screams Alpha to me 🙂

Yes I do consider the happy, joking hunks part of the alpha group. Absolutely! The “happy” “joking” is only part of the persona. There’s always a whole other side to them. Maybe it’s a side they only show to a chosen few, or they save the “darker” side for the bedroom.

Why I love Alpha Males is no real surprise! The perfect Alpha Male for me could be a Vampire, a Scottish Laird, an English Rogue/Gentleman, a Werewolf or Shape-shifter, or a Knight. He’s the rogue who thinks he can’t be reformed into a gentleman. He’s the rough and scarred Scottish laird that has a heart of gold. He’s the werewolf or shape-shifter that needs to heal an aching heart because it took him years to find his true mate. He’s the vampire who has waited decades for that special someone’s blood to sing to him and wake him up. And he’s the knight who can defeat the enemy with a quick swing of his sword, but can’t see the love in front of his face. My Alpha Male has eyes that can see into your soul and are as blue as the sea, or as black as a storm. He’s tall and brooding. His heart can enfold you into its grasp and make you fall in love when he gives it to you freely and completely. He is protective and passionate. In the end he is the one that makes your heart jump and butterflies fly in your stomach, and still kiss you until your legs melt!

I absolutely believe the happy, joking hunks are a part of the Alpha male group! Rhage, of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, for instance, is a jokester, but, has all the characteristics of the Alpha male, as well. He is sexy, good looking, strong, loyal, protective, possessive, and has that sweet, loving streak that I so love!

I think alpha personality traits can vary~ it’s the values and how they execute them that makes them the alpha. Altho, I prefer the strong silent type myself. 🙂

Alpha males are the best….strong, independent, fiercely protective, but on the inside they are nothing but a big ol’ teddy bear! I love the way their mouths talk filthy, but their eyes portray their sensitive sweet. They can be rough and tough in the bedroom, but still have the gentle caress of an attentive and protective lover. It’s all in the heart…..alpha males are the best!

I definitely think there’s room for the fun and joking men in the alpha category. I think the primary characteristics that an alpha has to have are determination, honesty, loyalty, compassion, and strength. There’s room for fun in my description.
